Cosco Shipping Ports, a Chinese state-owned enterprise, has acquired stakes in two container terminals at Thailand’s Laem Chabang Port, a significant step in China's push to strengthen its economic influence in Southeast Asia.

By investing $110 million, Cosco secured a 12.5% stake in Thai Laemchabang Terminal and a 30% stake in Hutchison Laemchabang Terminal, gaining access to seven berths and an expected annual capacity of 6.7 million TEU after expansion.

Laem Chabang Port is Thailand's busiest port, processing about 80% of the country’s containers and serving as a strategic location due to its proximity to Bangkok and Thailand’s industrial centers.

The investment aligns with China’s long-term strategy to enhance its presence in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor and reinforce Sino-Thai trade cooperation. Unlike other regions, Thailand’s regulatory environment has been welcoming to Cosco, further easing China’s expansion into Southeast Asia.
